For the first time in 20 years, I didn't go back to Minnesota for Christmas.  Lewis and I went to Spain, Barcelona and Madrid Dec. 23-31.  It was a great trip-- see some of the pics here.

Spent a fantastic fall morning up on Skyline Blvd. near Palo Alto picking up chestnuts from a 100 year-old grove.  They grow in these nasty burrs that fall off the tree when ripe, and have to be handled with heavy leather gloves.  The trick seems to be finding those that are big enough to justify the effort in preparing them.  More pics here.

Lots of pictures to share from a week in Hawaii, on the big island.

It's been a busy travel year!  Last weekend we took a long weekend to Palm Springs to visit Lewis's friends Ken and Doug.  It was a perfect warm weekend, mostly hanging out at the pool sipping Long Island iced tea.  One afternoon we took a tram up to the top of Mt. Jacincto, over a mile up!

Labor Day weekend the Winos went up to Seaside Oregon to stay with Annabel and Scott at Scott's family's house, on the beach.  Attempts to dig for clams were thwarted by random tide tables, driving rain, and surprise fishing regulations.  But nevertheless, we had a great time.  Food and wine were good and plentiful.  On Sunday Lewis, Michelle, Steve and I took a driving tour down the coast to Tilamook cheese.  Moo.

After 13 years, I returned to Edinburgh to meet Dan for the Frindge Festival.  Lewis and I stopped off at London for a few days beforehand.  It was a great trip!

We saw 15 shows in 5 days, and stayed with Dan's friends Bruce Knox and Tony Flynn.  The weather was amazing, sunny and warm but not hot.  Edinburghers said it was the best weather they'd seen in 13 years... I guess I bring it from California.

All the UK pics here!

Lewis was sent on a business trip to Minneapolis, and asked (jokingly, I think) if I wanted to join him.  Since I am off this week from work on an unpaid furlough (Thanks, Onstor!) I tagged along.  It was weird to be in the Twin Cities as a tourist, or at least playing tour guide.  It's a fantastic town to live in-- lots to do, comfortable and beautiful.  But it's not really a tourist town, so sites included the Guthrie Theater,  Walker Sculpture Garden, Minnehaha Falls, and of course, the Mall of America.

The amusement park inside is now a Nickelodeon theme, but it will always be Camp Snoopy to me.

More pics from the trip here.

Last weekend Gerald was in town for his mostly-annual long weekend on the west coast, complete with dinner party at Maurices house.  It's quite the dinner, two longs days of cooking, sever courses, everything insanely good.  This year had a "shipwreck" theme-- complete with mussel-on-crouton boat in fish chowder (capsize to complete) with islands of rissoto and polenta.

Many of the dinner guests were classmates of Gerald's from Harvard.  This weekend I returned to spend some time with Lewis, who was also there.  It was Santacon weekend in San Francisco.  Also, Tony and Jane hosted a nice afternoon holiday party at SPAF's newest property.  We're instructed to admire the excellent job the color coordinator did on the paint job for the house.  With so many Victorians in San Francisco, it's a full-time job.

Teresa bought a new house!  A nice little house on a big lot right next to Mission Cemetary in Santa Clara.  At the housewarming Steve, Michelle, David and I relax with some nice white wines in the shade.  You can see the cemetary trees there behind us over the fence.

Another big bumper-crop of tomatoes.  As usual, I make "sun dried" tomatoes with the extras so that I can eat them all winter.  This year I took advantage of the warm spot on the top of the hot tub to dry them.  Very yummy!

Two weeks ago I finally broke down and got a hot tub.  It's a Softub 220, which I found on Craigslist in Sacramento.  I had to rent a truck to go pick it up-- but since it really is 100% portable it was easy.

It's been a cool spring in California, and I was keen to get some sun.  Since I decided not to go on the RSVP cruise this year, I took a long weekend and went to visit my friend Randy in Palm Springs.  He's got a nice condo right in town, with a pool just outside his back door.

As it happened, that weekend was hosting a fundraiser for the local rodeo, and we went to the BBQ and horseback riding that afternoon.  It's been a while since I was on a horse-- it was a great ride!
